Photo Contest

This is my entry for the Idaho Falls Magazine Photo contest. These pictures came from my 4th of July camping trip and they match pretty well what the description of the categories are. I went through and found some pictures that I liked. I didn't care to edit them. Just submit them. Even if I do win I don't think that I can do much because they weren't taken in Idaho.

The reason that I chose to do this contest is because there are a lot of categories and I have pictures already taken that fit those categories. It seemed like a pretty easy contest to enter but I wish that they had some more information about anything that you are supposed to add in your e-mail. Oh well.

I am submitting these pictures on 7/12/2011.

Large Format Print

For this post we were asked to do a poster print of one of our pictures. I used this one taken at Bannack Ghost Town in Montana. It is an HDR of the side of an old building. Afterwards I lightened the side of a building and changed the white ballance to bring out the browns. There was a place in the window where the sky was purple so I painted over that to make it gray. I used adjustment layers with masks on the side of the building and the grass. I heightened the saturation on parts of it too. I then printed it out as a 24x36 inch poster and made a frame out of oak with the help of my wife's dad and put it all together with the help of my brother-in-law.

Title: Siding

Fine Art Template

About this post: Sometimes a picture itself isn't enough. Many times you will want to put this picture into a layout for different reasons and a good way to do this is with clipping mask. This way you can make a template and then put any picture behind the the picture that you want.

Location: 1/1250
F-Stop: f/2.5
Shutter Speed: 1/1250

Other: My family has a game called Skunk. It is played with dice and poker chips. We were playing on a card table and stacked up all of the chips and then someone hit the table and they all went flying. I thought that would be a cool to take a picture of the action. I used Photoshop to make a clipping mask and put the picture behind it.

Light and Night

About this Post: For this post we discovered that sometimes night time is the best time to take fascinating pictures. Just because it isn't a bright and sunny day you can still break out your camera and capture the moment.

Borders

About this post: For this post I took some pictures and then put some borders around them. The pictures were taken in Rupert Idaho and my wife's parent's home. The borders that I put on are the Paint-on border, a flexible vignette, and a burn border.

About this post: This whole semester I have been taking pictures with a camera. We are learning in class that a scanner is the same thing as a camera. This week instead of using a camera to take pictures I used a scanner.

Bannack Best

Ghost

Gallows

Bottle

Boardwalk

Corner

About this Post: For this post these are some of the best pictures taken at Bannack Ghost Town. I tried to choose pictures that are unique from perspectives that others might not have considered in the past. There are specific explanations of each picture in the information below.

Title: Ghost
Date/Time: 5/25/11, 12:02 PM
Location: Bannack, MT
F-Stop: f/22.0
Shutter Speed: 5.0
Camera: Canon EOS 60D
Other: The subject was in the frame for about 2 seconds and then left and the shutter was left open for an additional 3 seconds. I turned it black and white afterwards in Photoshop.

Title: Gallows
Date/Time: 5/25/11, 2:18 PM
Location: Bannack, MT
F-Stop: f/22
Shutter Speed: 1/80
Camera: Canon EOS 60D
Other: This picture was taken through the window of the Jail. Out the window there is a strait shot to the gallows. I backed up to the very back of the jail cell and then zoomed in to bring the gallows closer. Back in the day when the gallows were being used there would have been a building blocking this view but I still liked it.

Title:Bottle

Location: Bannack, MT
F-Stop: f/1.8
Shutter Speed: 1/1000

Location: Bannack, MT
F-Stop: f/3.5
Shutter Speed: 1/500
